FAQ

Questions, answered.

Straight answers to the questions creators ask us most. This is general information, not advice for your situation. Book a call for that.

When does a creator need an accountant?

There's no single trigger, but common moments include your first income outside a job, registering for Self Assessment, a big brand deal, going full-time, approaching the VAT threshold, or thinking about a limited company. Getting support early usually costs less than fixing problems later.

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your profit level, plans, how you want to take money out and the extra admin you're comfortable with. A limited company can be more tax-efficient at higher profits but isn't right for everyone. We review your numbers before recommending a structure.

How is platform income and brand-deal income taxed?

In general, income from platforms (such as creator funds, ad revenue, subscriptions and tips), brand deals and affiliate commissions is taxable business income. As a sole trader it's taxed through Self Assessment; through a company it's subject to Corporation Tax. We help you record it correctly and plan for the tax.

Do I pay tax on gifted products and PR packages?

HMRC's general view is that gifted products and services received in connection with your work as a creator, especially where something is expected in return, can count as taxable income at their value. The detail depends on the circumstances, so it's worth getting advice and keeping a record of what you receive.

What about income from overseas platforms or brands?

If you're UK tax resident, your worldwide income is generally taxable in the UK, including payments from overseas platforms and brands. Some may have had foreign tax deducted, and relief can sometimes be available. We help you report it correctly.

When do I need to register for VAT?

You must register when your VAT-taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold (currently £90,000) in any rolling 12-month period, or is expected to within the next 30 days. VAT on creator income, especially from overseas platforms and brands, can be complex, so we'll check how it applies to you.

Why does bookkeeping matter?

Good bookkeeping means you know what you earn, what you spend and what you owe, all year round. It underpins accurate tax returns, Making Tax Digital compliance, better decisions and a calmer January.

What expenses can I claim?

Generally, costs incurred wholly and exclusively for your business, such as equipment used for content, software, editing and some travel. Personal or mixed-use items have restrictions. We'll make sure you claim what you're entitled to, and only that.

Can you help with pensions?

Yes. We help you understand how pension contributions fit into your tax and business planning. Where regulated financial advice is needed, we'll point you to an appropriately authorised adviser.

How does onboarding work?

After your discovery call and proposal, we handle the switch from any previous accountant, get access to your accounts and HMRC, tidy up your records and set up your monthly reporting. We'll guide you through every step.

What's included in the Partnership?

Every core Partnership includes bookkeeping, annual accounts, your Self Assessment or Corporation Tax return, tax reserve and tax bill planning, ongoing support and a dedicated finance partner. You can add monthly extras such as VAT returns, payroll, a monthly dashboard, quarterly strategy reviews, cash-flow forecasting or Fractional CFO time, and book one-off Specialist Services with or without a Partnership. See our Pricing page; your final mix is agreed on your Discovery Call.
